E3 Ecology was instructed in 2021 to prepare and deliver a management plan for a Local Wildlife Site in Gateshead. The site comprised areas of degraded woodland alongside a former pond that had become heavily silted and no longer held water, limiting its ecological value. An initial site visit was undertaken to assess existing ecological constraints and identify opportunities for habitat enhancement.
Following this assessment, E3 Ecology worked closely with the landowner’s representative to agree a programme of management interventions, before liaising with the council ecology team to refine and approve the final proposals.
Targeted Management Plan
The agreed management plan focused on restoring habitat quality and increasing the site’s biodiversity value through a targeted suite of enhancements. Within the woodland, selective thinning of canopy cover was carried out to increase light penetration and promote a more diverse and species-rich ground flora. Invasive plant species were also removed to allow native vegetation to re-establish and thrive. The former pond was restored through the removal of accumulated silt and the careful reprofiling of its edges.
Clay was used to help retain water year-round, enabling the pond to function once again as a valuable wetland habitat. Pond margins were subsequently planted with a range of native aquatic and marginal species, creating suitable breeding and foraging habitat for amphibians and other wildlife.
Enhancing Habitats
Additional measures were implemented to support protected and notable species. Roosting opportunities were created within living trees through specialist arboricultural works, forming cavities and crevices in close collaboration with experienced tree surgeons. Bat boxes were installed to provide additional roosting options, whilst log piles and hibernacula were created across the site to benefit reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. New fencing was also installed to reduce unauthorised access and protect sensitive habitats.
As a result of these works, the site now supports a significantly enhanced range of habitats and provides suitable conditions for a variety of species. Ongoing management and monitoring ensure that the long-term biodiversity value of the site is maximised.
