In the world of development, timing is everything. Many protected species surveys in the UK are strictly seasonal, governed by the natural life cycles and activity patterns of the wildlife involved. Missing a specific survey window—such as the summer months for bat activity or the spring window for Great Crested Newt eDNA—can delay a planning application by up to a year.
At E3 Ecology, we advocate for a “survey-first” approach. By conducting a Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA) early in the project lifecycle, we identify potential constraints and map out a bespoke survey schedule. This pragmatic strategy ensures that you have the right data at the right time, keeping your project on track and within budget.
Use the calendar below to identify the optimal and sub-optimal survey windows for every major protected species group in the UK. Colour-coded by survey viability, it gives you an at-a-glance view of when each assessment can be carried out — and when it cannot.
