James Matlock

James joined E3 Ecology in 2026 after completing his MSc in Conservation and Ecosystem Management at Newcastle University. During his studies, he developed a strong understanding of habitat survey methodologies, ecological monitoring frameworks, species identification (including priority and invasive species), and GIS analysis.

While at university, James undertook a range of field studies, including his master’s dissertation on the nesting behaviour of Common Swifts in the suburbs of Newcastle upon Tyne. This project involved conducting dusk surveys to identify nesting locations, alongside GIS analysis to assess how environmental factors—such as proximity to green space, artificial lighting, and traffic—may influence nesting success. He also incorporated a citizen science element to evaluate local awareness of swift conservation and community engagement with ongoing protection efforts.

James has additional experience in UKHab and NVC habitat classification across woodland, grassland, and heathland environments, as well as contributing to Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments for development projects.

Following his studies, James further developed his field skills in species identification through involvement in surveys for bats, wintering birds, badgers, and amphibians. He also worked as an assistant surveyor with E3 Ecology during the 2025 bat survey season.

Now working as a Graduate Ecologist, James supports the delivery of protected species surveys, ecological appraisals, and Biodiversity Net Gain assessments.
